Polishing is very time consuming and hard if you are inexperienced.

When you use ultimate compound, while it removes deeper scratches, you get smaller holograms/hazing from it. You need to follow up with another very light polish. Make sure you use a pad that has little to no cut (black pad) and that you are not dry buffing (too little product). If you don't do the light polishing step correct to remove the hazing, it'll leave some hazing itself.

I did ALOT of research before I started detailing. autogeek.net is a great place to learn the basics of everything you need to know about detailing.

I'm not sure if SwirlX is enough to remove the 2000 grit sanding. If you do end up with haze that can't be removed from Swirl X, you should try using a DA with a black foam pad and Menzerna PO85RD (removes 2000 grit also).

When I polished my black Z, it was a nightmare. The paint was so soft (easy to scratch), if I wasn't careful, it left small tick marks even after polishing with po85rd and a black pad.

I found that using Meguiar's M105 (w/ orange pad) and Menzerna PO85RD (w/ black pad) is a perfect 2 step to remove all deep swirls and light hazing.

I don't know much about using wool pads or rotary buffers but you can easily burn through your paint with that combination. I leave that to the professionals.
